Why we did it
The Net-Zero User Design Grant from InnovateUK was created to support solutions with significant real-world impact. Mosa secured this grant to refine its smart dock solution — ensuring it meets user needs more effectively through collaboration with the Design Council and Sustainable Ventures' design team.
We had already agreed on a commercial pilot with Olympic Park and Westfield Shopping Centre, but the additional InnovateUK support allowed us to go beyond simple deployment. Through rigorous user interviews, iterative design improvements, and usability testing, we enhanced both our smart dock and the Mosa app.
Urban cycling adoption is often hindered by security concerns — 66% of surveyed cyclists had experienced bike theft. This pilot focused on providing secure bike parking, increasing trust, and evaluating revenue models for long-term sustainability.
How we did it
Phase 1 —
User & Landlord Engagement
-
20 cyclists surveyed on habits, motivations, and security concerns
-
11 in-depth user interviews conducted to refine product-market fit
-
2 landlord interviews to assess infrastructure needs and feasibility
-
Key insight: Trust & Security were top concerns over gamification or carbon tracking
-
Convenience, affordability, and environmental benefits were the main cycling motivators
Phase 2 — Trust Campaign & System Refinement
Onboarding journey mapping to identify user concerns and optimise communication
Trust-building: experimental signage, online campaigns, and user workshops
Enhanced signage & app UI for clarity of messaging and instructions
Docks upgraded to Sold Secure Diamond standard — maximum security certification
Phase 3 — Pilot Deployment
Westfield Stratford International Station — 5 docks
Westfield Parade — 5 docks
London Aquatics Centre — 4 docks
Copper Box Arena — 3 docks
Timber Lodge Café — 3 docks
Real-time adjustments to app UI and user onboarding; live chat support introduced
What we achieved
82% of registered users were repeat users by the final week, demonstrating genuine sustained demand for secure parking — not just curiosity. E-bike users were notably more likely to replace car trips, and high-value bike owners preferred quieter locations that balanced security with convenience.
Trust-building efforts proved critical: initial uncertainty led to lower early sign-ups, but sustained engagement increased week-on-week, peaking at a 93% session completion rate in Week 20.
-
E-bike contribution: 341.9 kg CO₂ saved (111 trips replacing car journeys, 1,775 km)
-
Standard bike contribution: 120 kg CO₂ saved (104 trips replacing car journeys, 624 km)
-
Projected doubling of savings if sessions scale to 1,500 trips within 3 months
Next steps
Mosa is now working towards city-wide expansion and permanent installations across key urban locations, including negotiating long-term agreements at Westfield, QEOP, and new sites. A hybrid pricing model (free short-term + premium secure storage) is being tested to balance affordability and financial sustainability.
Expansion is also underway into Belfast, Dublin, and Tel Aviv, alongside MaaS API/SDK partnerships to reduce adoption barriers across urban mobility platforms.
